The Old Guard was 22 years old when the first “Man of the Year” was selected.  The recipient was Robert Henderson, our Founding President.  He actually served as President for over 3 years.  Since then we have not failed to recognize annually a member who, in the spirit of Robert Henderson's long term service to the organization, has given of himself year after year to enhance the enjoyment substantially that the Old Guard provides to all of us.
The Man of the Year Award Committee is unique in that the committee is composed entirely of active Old Guard members who have received the award in a prior year

The plaque presented to the Old Guard Man of the Year reads “with sincere appreciation for outstanding and dedicated service to our organization”.

This an understatement and does not reflect many hours of service and constant awareness and importance of the Old Guard to the recipient.t

Arthur Howard the recipient of the 2011 Man of The Year Award is a native of White Plains. He spent some ten years in optometry school and practicing his profession in California.

Some time later he decided that teaching was his calling. He returned East and started at the White Plains Junior High School level but soon move to the High School where he became a beloved teacher of science.

He is a talented magician and has entertained the Old Guard many times. His greatest success as a prestidigitator came when he was performing in the Catskills and enchanted a young lady who soon became his bride.

His activities have not been confined to the Old Guard he has been active in White Plains affairs for many years. He has made the Old Guard aware of a myriad of cultural and academic activities in the city. He is a member of Kol Ami Synagogue where he was especially interested in their continuing education program.

He has been honored as few before him having been made a Member Emeritus of The Old Guard. This generally means he is put out to pasture but on the contrary he has been busier than ever with the Old Guard.

Since his joining The Old Guard, almost twenty years ago, he has introduced a many new and highly qualified members. In addition he has provided a multitude of speakers on a variety of topics always preparing the audiovisual committee as to what devices were necessary for the presentation

For some time he reviewed the previous week’s program making it more understandable to us all.

His latest contribution had been as a member and moderator of our new Timely Topic Program which offers discussions of current affairs.

Arthur embodies our motto “stay young with The Old Guard”

Arthur Howard is a a man universally admired and respected . It is with great pride the Old Guard of White Pains proclaimed him Man of the Year for 2001
