The
Monthly Luncheon-Bridge has been an Old Guard program for many years.
It enables wives or friends of members to participate in a social
gathering held at a variety of private clubs. At present we are
hosted by several local .clubs. It usually takes place on the third
Thursday of each month. The luncheon is price-fixed and there is
a choice of entrees superbly prepared by the Clubs' chefs.
Men's Bowling LeagueMembers
of the Old Guard of White Plains meet every Monday at one p.m.
at the White
Lawn BowlingBeginning in May, some thirty to forty members take time each Friday morning for twenty weeks of lawn bowling in Saxon Woods facilites, near the Saxon Woods Pool on Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains.. Divided into ten teams of four, with one members acting as captain, the lawn bowlers spend about two hours a day, absorbed in a contest of skill and some luck, trying to place a pair of balls as close to a target (called a jack), as possible. The dimension of each of the five courts is approximately 80 by 12 feet, with the jack set equidistant from each end. While providing some mild exercise, this activity is primarily an opportunity to socialize. The season culminates in a dinner where awards are presented.
An ice chest containing soft drinks is always near-by, with members assuming responsibility to keep it filled. Nearby parking is provided by the Parks Department. GolfStarting in May, a dozen or so bleary eyed seniors greet the early morning dawn to assemble at the Rockland Lakes Park to enjoy a stimulating round of golf each Monday. We play the executive course with consists of 18 three par holes, the longest of which is 216 xyards. Needless to say the man with a good short game and deadly putter has the advantage. The course is challenging though short, with water hazards, steep drops and plenty of wildlife to observe. During the season several men host a“nineteenth hole” with drinks and food to fortify us for the next round. Periodically we are challenged by a closest-to-the-hole contest with prizes to the winners. At the end of the season, when it becomes too cold to play, these hearty souls enjoy a luncheon with good food, drinks and prizes for the season’s best golfers.

Annual Dinner Dance
The Annual Dinner Dance is the largest and arguably the most important single event of the year for the Old Guard. It is attended by at least half of the membership, and an equal number of wives and significant others and involves the active participation of the largest number of members to carry it forward. The Chairman of the event is like a conductor of a large orchestra putting together and guiding the various segments of people who will help him to make the event successful.
